Why is it important to Dickies to fight for equality and to uplift Black-owned businesses, workers and the next generation?
At Dickies, we know making statements is not enough. We want to take action in standing against racism and standing up for the Black community and workers everywhere. These times are a current reminder that America has hard work to do to fight racism against the Black community and equal access to this dignity of work.
45% of Black small business owners say they can only stay afloat for 6 months, max, because of difficulty accessing federal coronavirus relief funds. And since before coronavirus, Black-owned businesses are twice as likely to be rejected for loans. We believe the dignity of work should be equally available for everyone and are committed to doing our part to make a difference.

Have you already been in contact with the Nation Urban League (NUL) and the Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF) about the donation, and do you know what each organization will be doing with the donation?
The NUL is a historic civil rights and urban advocacy organization with 90 affiliates serving 300 communities. The NUL provides direct services that impact and improve the lives of more than two million people nationwide. The organization also understands that the number one challenge facing 80% of small business owners is a lack of capital and cash flow. To help, they started the Entrepreneurship Center program in 2006, and since then, have counseled, mentored, and trained over 60,000 businesses. The Dickies donation to NUL’s Entrepreneurship Center will support in the fight for equality, and also uplift Black-owned businesses and workers.
The HHF is a non-profit, grassroots, skateboard community-based organization whose mission is to use skateboarding as a vehicle to provide underserved urban youth with valuable life experiences that nurture individual creativity, resourcefulness, and the development of life skills. Since 2007, the HHF has used donated funds to provide more than 200 need-based scholarships for NYC youth to attend summer action sports training camps and to support the development of a variety of programs serving skaters 6-30.
Will the $100K be split equally between NUL and HHF, and will it be donated in the immediate?
NUL’s national Entrepreneurship Center enables minority entrepreneurs, running their businesses as sole proprietors, to be able to hire employees and grow their revenues above $750K and to help small businesses expand and thrive. With the opportunity to help Black-owned small businesses in many local communities across the country, Dickies has donated $75,000 to NUL.
We have had an ongoing partnership with HHF since 2017, annually contributing need-based scholarships to New York City youth (age 15-18) to attend summer action sports training camps. We’ve increased our commitment to HHF by donating $25,000.
Both organizations will receive their funds immediately.
You mention that this is just the start of actions that Dickies is taking in the fight for equality, what more are you planning?
We want to take action in standing against racism and standing up for the Black community and workers everywhere. Our donation announcement acknowledges that making a difference means being committed. We have more plans in development and will announce those in the coming weeks.
Have all Dickies stores reopened?

What health and safety features will be in place in your stores?
We're committed to helping customers stay safe and healthy. We are going beyond local government guidelines by making masks available to all associates and hand sanitizer is available at the store entrance. All areas of our stores have undergone a complete, deep sanitization before reopening and will be regularly sanitized in accordance with government guidelines.
Is there a limit on how many people can enter the store at once?
Because we are prioritizing your healthy and safety and in order to maintain a physical distance between customers, we're limiting the number of people allowed in each store. This is based on the size of the store, with a maximum of one person every 6 ft.
Will fitting rooms be open?
At the moment, fitting rooms will remain closed. We hope to reopen them in the near future.
What healthy and safety features will be in place for your employees and customers?
The health, safety and well-being of our employees and customers are our number one priority. We’ve taken several measures to ensure you can safely shop and purchase the workwear you need to do your job. Our measures include:
- Social distancing within the store by limiting the number of customers based on 6 ft of distance.
- Facial coverings made available for employees.
- Sanitization stations for customers and employees in every store.
- Daily deep cleaning and sanitization of every store.
- Additional cleaning of surfaces throughout the day.
- Fitting Rooms will be closed for now, we will continually evaluate based on local health guidelines.
- Product returns and exchanges will be dated, staged in hold bins for 72 hours prior to being returned to saleable stock.
- We will offer employees emergency pay leave if they or someone in their family are impacted by COVID-19.
Will Dickies continue to pay retail associates while the remaining stores are closed?
Dickies associates employed at closed retail stores will continue to receive full pay and benefits during this time period.
How are you ensuring customer safety while you continue to keep your warehouse and ecommerce online?
Here is what we know from the CDC: In general, because of poor survivability of coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases of COVID-19 in the United States associated with imported goods.
What consideration are you giving to the health, safety and continued well-being of employees in your broader supply chain?
The health and safety of our employees worldwide, as well as those workers in our extended supply chain, are our top priority. We are continuing to monitor COVID-19 as it is evolving globally and are taking every precaution within the supply chain we can.
